For the first time since 2019, Dallas' St. Patrick's Day parade is back.
PUBLISHED 12:02 PM CST Mar. 11, 2022The event attracted over 120,000 people in 2019 and event organizers expect even more to attend the parade along Greenville Avenue March 12., who organizes the event, named Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki this year’s grand marshal. This is the parade's 41st year, and since Nowitzki’s jersey was #41 he’s the “perfect person to have as a grand marshal this year,” according to the event’s executive producer Mauricio Navarro.
The money raised from the parade goes toward the GAABA Scholarship Fund, which provides $45,000 to graduating seniors in DISD. Anyone can make a“Our goal this year is to raise $41,000 in donations,” said Nowitzki. “We would love to achieve that goal with your help.” According to the GABBA website, in the parade’s early years, word got around about this little neighborhood spectacle and attendance grew. Residents in the surrounding neighborhoods felt the parade attracted too much traffic and drunk college students, and they overwhelmingly spoke out to their area council person. In 1987, the Dallas City Council canceled the event all together.
The city soon agreed, and it granted the permit for the 1989 Greenville Ave. St. Patrick’s Parade. That year’s parade received rave reviews in the Dallas Morning News as “a real hum-dinger and a lot of fun for the whole family.” There were over 20,000 spectators that year, a green longhorn steer, three elephants with green toenails. The same councilperson who adamantly opposed the parade in previous years even served as a judge.
