Senior Cpl. Melvin Williams was placed on paid administrative leave after video of the July 18 incident circulated online. He was already under two use-of-force investigations at the time.
Police Chief Eddie García decided on Williams’ disciplinary action Tuesday, a department spokesman said. García declined to elaborate, saying his decision “speaks for itself.” The camera briefly cuts away from the pair. When it pans toward the other side of the street, Williams can be seen shoving the man into a post before straddling him and punching him several times. Many of the punches connect with the man’s face.has requested body-camera footage from the Deep Ellum incident, but Dallas police have asked Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton to rule that the department does not have to release the video.
