The City of Dallas is preparing for a winter storm by opening several temporary shelters for people experiencing homelessness.
The City of Dallas Office of Homeless Solutions is setting up a Temporary Inclement Weather Shelter (TWIS) in the Automobile Building in Fair Park on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022, ahead of a winter storm. Icy conditions are forecast overnight Wednesday into Thursday this week. The city is also planning on opening Fair Park’s Grand Place building, located at 3701 Grand Ave, as a temporary overnight shelter. The shelter will open Sunday and remain open until nighttime temperatures rise above freezing.
Oak Lawn United Methodist Church, located at 3014 Oak Lawn Ave, is currently looking for volunteers for its shelter, which it said on social media could open as early as Monday. Additionally, the Carr P. Collins Social Service Center, located at 5302 Harry Hines Boulevard, will open its warming shelter once temperatures reach freezing. The Irving Community Center, located at 1752 E. Airport Freeway, will be open on Sunday and until forecasted temperatures in Irving rise above 32 degrees. The shelter has a capacity of 85 people. Arlington’s Life Shelter, located at 325 West Division Street, will be open Sunday through Tuesday, the city said in a statement. The shelter will be accepting individuals from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Once capacity is reached, guests will be referred to the Salvation Army of North Texas, located at 712 W. Abram Street, with intake from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The Salvation Army Denton, located at 1508 E. McKinney Street, Denton Civic Center, 321 E. McKinney Street; and Denton Community Shelter operated by Our Daily Bread, 909 N. Loop 288, will be open as warming centers. Additionally, multiple public libraries and recreation centers in Denton, as well as the Lewisville Public Library, will be open as a warming center
