Dallas’ mayor right to put homeless strategy under a microscope | Opinion

This is not a seat-of-the-pants assessment. Led by Housing Forward chairman Peter Brodsky, Dallas Housing Authority board chairwoman Betty Culbreath and Family Gateway chief executive Ellen Magnis, the task force will present recommendations to the mayor by June 15, a short turnaround time that demonstrates urgency. Other task force participants add expertise in public safety, mental health, housing and public policy research that should produce meaningful results.
We also hope that the task force will spotlight logjams in this process and propose creative solutions to address the financial, bureaucratic and other issues that make reducing homelessness such a massive challenge. This review also must include the impact of mental health and criminal backgrounds on housing options, financing alternatives that have worked elsewhere and strategies to obtain greater cooperation and resources from neighboring counties and cities to address a regional challenge.
