As Texas students were returning to classrooms last month, we school board trustees were anxiously awaiting the Texas Education Agency release of A-F accountability ratings. We were disappointed when the publication of the letter grades for our districts and campuses was It’s not because we were looking forward to showing off or competing with other districts. As board presidents for two of the largest public school districts in Texas, we are committed to transparency. In order to make the best decisions for the children we serve, it’s important we look clearly and honestly at education outcomes, even — especially — when data reveals we still have work to do.because we have nothing to hide from our school communities.
Data provides parents and guardians with informed choices among schools. Data also helps us better serve all of our students. By highlighting schools that are educating students and effectively preparing them for success after graduation, we provide a snapshot of what’s working in our communities.
Years of assessment and accountability data clearly show the best thing we can do for students is make significant, strategic investment in teachers. Recruiting, developing and retaining effective teachers requires a great deal of resources, but. We hope state leaders will be as clear-eyed and transparent about this situation as we have been about our own outcomes.
