Dallas-Fort Worth school districts are closely monitoring forecasts for a wintry mix of snow and rain, potentially impacting classes and activities later this week.

School districts in the Dallas-Fort Worth area are closely monitoring the frigid conditions and the possibility of inclement weather as they welcome students back from the winter break. The region is expected to receive a wintry mix of snow and rain later this week, with meteorologists predicting that snow could start falling late Wednesday night. Most of the impact, however, is likely to take place Thursday and last into Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

School districts say they are watching the forecasts to determine whether to cancel or adjust classes later this week. So far, only some changes to athletic or after-school activities have been announced as of Tuesday evening. The DeSoto ISD said that it will alert parents through its website, social media as well as through phone calls and text messages if the district needs to adjust school operations due to inclement weather. This decision will depend on assessments of road conditions, forecasts and available energy for heating school facilities. DeSoto ISD similarly said that classes are continuing as normal Wednesday because rainy and snowy conditions are not expected until the night time. But the school district said it has decided to end athletic practices at 5 p.m. Wednesday and cancel all after-school activities “out of an abundance of caution.” In case of school cancellations or adjustments such as early dismissals, there will be announcements on its website, social media and ParentSquare by 6 a.m. In order to make these decisions, Garland ISD will assess weather and road safety conditions, as well as communicate with neighboring school districts, according to the spokesperson. Other considerations include childcare, parents’ work schedules and staff who live outside the district. Fort Worth ISD has not announced any class cancellations, though there have been adjustments for athletic activities
