Like the Cowboys, Mike Tyson hasn’t won a championship since 1996. But he’s spent most of that time being retired. If only America’s Team had that excuse.
Late last Friday night, many of us came to an agreement. We decided it just wasn’t right to watch a sad, decrepit champion from the 1990s compete at Arlington ’s AT& T Stadium , especially when that champion was motivated almost entirely by money and had no real chance of winning. To expect anything other than exactly what happened, we’d have to be complete suckers, wouldn’t we? Well, maybe so. And yet, three nights after watching Mike Tyson , millions watched the Dallas Cowboys , anyway.
In any other franchise, this would be considered general-manager malpractice, especially when the rosters built by that general manager have fallen short of the conference championship game in each of the last 28 years. But in Dallas, of course, the general manager is invincible. The owner isn’t going to fire himself.
