The Dallas Cowboys are hiring SMU defensive coordinator Scott Symons. He will join defensive coordinator Christian Parker’s staff as inside linebackers coach.

SMU defensive coordinator Scott Symons watches warmups before the ACC championship game against Clemson, Saturday, Dec. 7, 2024, in Charlotte, N.C.Symons, after four seasons at SMU, will join new Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker’s staff as inside linebackers coach.

In 2024, he helped SMU reach the ACC championship game and College Football Playoff for the first time in program history, as SMU had the second-best rushing defense in program history, allowing just 100.2 yards per game. The mark was good for seventh best in FBS and best in the ACC. This past season, Symons helped SMU’s defense finish fifth in the nation in turnovers gained, fifth in red zone defense, eighth in passes intercepted, 19th in rushing defense and 23rd in sacks.Symons has been a Broyles Award nominee the last three seasons — which is given to the nation’s top collegiate assistant. During his four years at SMU, Symons helped produce NFL talent like Elijah Roberts , Elijah Chatman and Jared Harrison-Hunte .Symons is a Dallas-Fort Worth native. He grew up in Hurst and graduated from Fort Worth Christian in 2004. He was a second-team all-state linebacker at FWC before he played at Lindenwood University.The Mustangs have now seen both of their coordinators from 2025 depart for other jobs. Offensive coordinator Casey Woods took the head coach job at Missouri State in December.that he would not be hiring someone to replace Woods, but rather multiple assistants would share the role.
