The Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) has announced the first West Nile virus death of the year. The patient, an Irving woman, was diagnosed with West Nile neuroinvasive disease. Dr. Philip Huang, director of DCHHS, emphasized the importance of protecting against mosquito bites that can transmit diseases like WNV.

“It’s very sad to report the first West Nile Virus death this season,” Dr. Philip Huang, director of DCHHS, said in a news release. “This again reminds us how important it is to protect against mosquito bites that can carry multiple diseases like WNV.”

DCHHS data from last week shows that 167 mosquito traps in Dallas County tested positive for West Nile, with seven human cases of the virus being reported since January.West Nile virus can spread to humans and animals through infected mosquitoes. Dallas reported itsWest Nile can be detected through blood or cerebrospinal fluid tests. Less than 1% of people that contract the virus require hospitalization.
