Dallas County cuts 101 voting locations for May elections
Dallas County commissioners approved of a roster with fewer polling locations, after a citizens committee and the elections department cut out buildings with limited access.Josephine PetersonDallas County residents will have fewer locations to vote during May elections, a move the elections administrator said will save taxpayer money and ax places with low voter turnout or building accessibility concerns.
Decreasing the number of voting centers reduces costs by about $792,744, according to an estimate by the elections department, which Scarpello confirmed. Dallas County established a Vote Center Advisory Committee to determine future voting centers. The committee makes recommendations to the Commissioners Court on the number of polling places and where they should be located.
“Because of that, the participating jurisdictions are always concerned with the bill that they get sent to conduct this election,” Scarpello said. “So we’re trying to always cut our costs as much as possible internally.”“The same interest there is in voting in an election is the same interest there is in working in an election,” Scarpello said.
The committee sent its list of 362 recommended locations for low-turnout elections to the Dallas County Elections Department, where staff met with commissioners and made slight changes to the roster. County staff removed some locations and added more, bumping the final total of voting centers for low-turnout elections to 369, Scarpello said.
