Dallas College elections come as the school works to rebound from COVID-19 disruptions, navigates its consolidation and transitions to new leadership....
Garcia, a retired physician, said the college needs to broaden its involvement with high schools to secure a pipeline of students, especially those who may not see higher education as a realistic goal because of the cost of universities.
Davenport, a former professional recruiter, has criticized current trustees as mismanaging the transition into a single institution and the funds invested in the process. The transition initially sounded like it was being done for good reasons, she said. Officials had noted, for example, that it would keep more students on track to earning degrees if they took classes at more than one campus.
Ritter, 63, senior vice president at GreenLight Credentials, said if reelected, he wants to double down on areas where the college has already seen growth, such as in early college programs that allow high schoolers to earn dual credit. Mayer, 72, the Garland Chamber of Commerce’s CEO, said he wants to promote a sense of unity after restructuring disrupted the system. Meanwhile, college leaders have a “great amount of trust and relationships that have to be restored, starting with faculty.”Officials have said the college consolidation’s main goal was to prevent students from running into hurdles while obtaining their degrees or industry certificates.
