Dallas City Council split on right time to vote on new short-term rental rules

Six council members said they were ready to vote on the proposal, but not everyone could agree.

“I think that there’s a lot of unanswered questions,” Bazaldua said. “And if we were to just go ahead and make this decision because we want to make a decision, there is everlasting impacts to our ability to regulate any of the short term rentals in our city.”

The new rules, approved by the City Plan Commission in December, would reclassify rentals listed on platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo in the city code as similar to commercial hotels, which would prevent them from operating in residential zones. The change would also include required off-street parking and limits on the amount of rentals in a single unit.

The regulations would also mandate annual registration for property owners, require all short-term rental owners and hosts to provide a name of an emergency contact who has to respond to incidents within an hour and ban short-term rental properties from being within 2,000 feet from each other.
