Dallas City Attorney Tammy Palomino listens to public comment alongside Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson during a City Council meeting in September 2023.

The council vote Wednesday ends a seven-month stretch where Palomino was temporarily filling in as the city’s top lawyer since former City Attorney Chris Chris Caso“I just wanted to say thank you very much for your confidence in our office,” Palomino told the council after their approval and a standing ovation from the group. “We have an amazing group of attorneys who are very dedicated to this city and do an amazing job.

Palomino has been a licensed Texas lawyer since 2002 and was hired by the city in 2003 as a community prosecutor. Before Caso retired, Palomino was Dallas’ first assistant city attorney and the city attorney’s office’s chief of general counsel.Palomino’s interim appointment in February came with a City Council approval of a 15% salary raise to $303,848. The City Council on Wednesday approved boosting her annual salary to $325,000, which is what Caso was making when he left the position.

Several council members cited Palomino’s guidance and expertise among the reasons why they felt confident that the city didn’t have to look outside its ranks for a new city attorney. “I did want this community to know this is all about qualifications, leadership, the ability to deliver,” said council member Carolyn King Arnold, the council’s deputy mayor pro tem. “We want to continue to support her while we are faced with so many challenging decisions and calls that we have to make.”.
