Dallas church once owned by ‘Corabeth Walton’ needs a rescue from demolition by neglect | SharonFGrigsby
Actress Ronnie Claire Edwards bought the building originally founded in 1910 as St. Joseph's Catholic Church.Thank goodness the 22 original stained-glass windows that adorn the sanctuary appear intact. Exterior protective panels, now cloudy and yellowing, conceal the beauty of the fragile windows but also guard against damage.
René Schmidt, one of the two preservationists who joined my informal inspection, has regularly filed code complaints with the city about the property’s deficiencies. He’s flabbergasted that anyone wouldn’t want to see this iconic church well cared for.. “We can’t afford to lose it.”On some visits, Schmidt has crossed paths with homeless men living on the property, and I saw ample evidence that some of them regularly seek refuge inside the church.
Anderson said the building appears stable and, “by far, the biggest concern is that people are getting in through the unsecured doors or other opportunities.”Formergarden and home editor Mariana Greene wrote in 2009 about the transformation of St. Joseph’s by Edwards, who spent her early acting days here and returned to perform at the Dallas Theater Center, Theatre Three and the Bath House Cultural Center.
Old East Dallas resident Norma Minnis, like the two preservationists who joined me Wednesday, saw first-hand Edwards’ grand and eccentric transformation of St. Joseph’s. The notation of the original Sisters of Divine Providence, the order of nuns that ran St. Joseph's school, still remains on the building.
I asked the listing agent for the price and for a look inside the buildings, but didn’t receive a response.
