The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas is one of the largest funders of cancer research nationally, awarding over $3 billion in grants since gaining statewide voter approval in 2007.A Dallas biotechnology company, ImmuneSensor Therapeutics Inc., is getting a $16 million boost from the state’s cancer-fighting agency to help bring a new drug to market that triggers a patient’s immune system to fight cancer.

ImmuneSensor Therapeutics’ drug is derived from research by UT Southwestern Medical Center’s Zhijian Chen, whom CPRIT has backed for the last decade. In awarding product development grants, Le Beau said the agency looks not only at scientific excellence but also at the potential impact on the state’s cancer burden. “The institutions in Dallas-Fort Worth really demonstrate the medical and scientific preeminence of Texas institutions,” she said.

CPRIT is one of the largest funders of cancer research nationally, awarding over $3 billion in grants since gaining statewide voter approval in 2007. It has recruited more than 281 distinguished researchers to Texas, and supported expansions and relocations of 52 companies to the state.The University of Texas at Arlington: $250,000 for ultrasensitive nanosensor-based detection of tumors to enable personalized cancer immunotherapy.
