‘La Línea Imaginaria’ examines the complicated nature of the U.S.-Mexico border.

Artist Karla García's ceramic cacti are on display at the Museo de Arqueología e Historia de El Chamizal in Juárez and the Chamizal National Memorial in El Paso. Her binational exhibition “La Línea Imaginaria” is on display through Nov. 30.Much has been made of the Texas-Mexico border, especially in the past six years: where it is drawn, what it represents, how it is managed.

Through Nov. 30, the Museo de Arqueología e Historia de El Chamizal in Juárez and the Chamizal National Memorial in El Paso will house complementary exhibits by García that reflect on the history of the Chamizal border dispute. A shift in the Rio Grande in the mid-1800s that exposed 600 acres of land on the U.S. side led to the 100-year-long disagreement.

For the current exhibition, García, who teaches at Dallas College and whose work has been seen at the Nasher Sculpture Center and 12.26 Gallery, created a collection of clay drawings, photographs, video and sculptural cactus forms. She centers much of the exhibit on these small-scale, raw clay sculptures as a way to capture Mexico’s cultural history. Collaborating with photographer Alejandro Bringas, she documented the works throughout the Samalayuca Desert and along the border wall.

Her cacti in material and in form are both natural and unnatural, organic and formed, representational and yet very real, which might also be a way to describe the border itself.Artist Karla García’s binational exhibition “La Línea Imaginaria” is on display through Nov. 30 at the Museo de Arqueología e Historia de El Chamizal in Juárez and the Chamizal National Memorial in El Paso.
