Authorities are searching for a Dallas -based American Airlines flight attendant who went missing during a layover in Colombia over the weekend.Fernando Gutierrez, 32, disappeared Saturday night while in Medellín for a routine layover, according to local reports.
He was scheduled to stay overnight before working a flight to Miami the following day.Gutierrez reportedly shared his location at an Airbnb shortly before he went missing. Friends and coworkers have since filed missing person reports with local authorities. The Association of Professional Flight Attendants told FOX 4 it is supporting all efforts to locate their colleague. In a statement, American Airlines said it is "actively engaged" with local law enforcement and is providing support to Gutierrez’s family during the ongoing investigation.Lawmakers in Columbia shared a missing person flyer on social media asking anyone with information to contact local police or the United States Embassy in the capital city of Bogotá.Retired FBI agent Ken Gray explained that the agency will likely work with the embassy to investigate the case."The FBI cannot do an investigation on their own inside a foreign country. Instead, they work with the police in that country, the national police usually in that country. And so, any type of ongoing investigation would be directed by the local police with the FBI monitoring their progress on that case," he said.Details regarding the circumstances of Gutierrez's disappearance remain limited. It is unclear if foul play is suspected at this time.FOX 4 was able to reach Gutierrez's sister by phone, but she said her family is not yet ready to comment.
