China is forging ahead with an ambitious project to construct the Dalian Jinzhou Bay International Airport, a massive facility that will sit on an artificial island in Liaoning province.
The development will cover roughly 7.7 square miles and feature four extensive runways alongside a terminal complex that stretches over 222 acres. By the time it is completed the airport will claim the title of the world's largest airfield built on a man‑made island, a record that underscores the scale of the undertaking.
Planners have designed the new hub to meet the 4F standard, the highest classification for civilian aircraft, allowing it to accommodate the largest wide‑body jets in operation today. The site is expected to handle around 540,000 movements each year and serve close to 80 million passengers, positioning Dalian as a key node in regional and international air traffic networks.
The motivation for this water‑based solution stems from the constraints faced by Dalian's existing Zhoushuizi International Airport, which has reached full capacity despite multiple expansion attempts. The older airport lies too close to the city centre, leaving little room for further growth and creating a bottleneck for both passenger and cargo flows.
By shifting the new facility onto a reclaimed island in Jinzhou Bay, planners gain virtually limitless space for runways, terminals, and ancillary services while also reducing noise and pollution impacts on densely populated urban areas. Dalian's strategic location near the Korean Peninsula and the Japanese archipelago makes it a natural gateway for tourism, shipping, and energy industries, and the new airport is intended to reinforce that role.
Construction has progressed steadily, with more than 3,500 workers assembling foundations and sub‑sea structures. As of May 2026 the project was reported to be 37 percent complete, a notable achievement given the engineering challenges involved. Piles have been driven up to 82 feet beneath the seabed to provide a stable platform, and the overall build will require in excess of 56 million cubic yards of fill material, a volume roughly twelve times that used for the Hoover Dam.
The estimated cost of the venture stands at about $7.5 billion, reflecting both the scale of the infrastructure and the high‑tech methods employed. The airport is slated to begin handling flights around 2035, and while final outcomes remain uncertain, the initiative aligns with China's broader ambition to expand its aviation capacity and to cement its status as a global industrial and logistical powerhouse.
Analysts note that the project could also play a part in reshaping global air travel demand, as China is projected to overtake the United States in passenger numbers in the coming decades, making the Dalian Jinzhou Bay International Airport a potential linchpin in that shift
