STAFF REPORT MIDLAND CITY — A local student is gearing up to compete at a national FFA competition this week.
Kaitlynn Wood, a senior at Dale County High School, is currently the Alabama FFA South District vice president and the school’s FFA student advisor. She will compete in the National FFA Convention & Expo in Extemporaneous Public Speaking on Nov. 1-4 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The 96th National FFA Convention is a large gathering of students from around the nation who take part in a variety of competitions. These aspiring learners also sharpen their skills and delve into the professional world of agriculture through workshops and educational tours.Participants are not given a topic until the day of their competition, where they choose a prompt and have 30 minutes to prepare a speech.
People are also reading… Although DCHS has been represented in team competitions in the past, Wood is the first individual to compete from Dale County. She is also the first from the school to take part in the competition since the 1990s. Wood’s interest in public speaking began when she competed in a prepared public speaking contest for her elementary school’s 4-H organization. This launched her journey into new beginnings as she entered high school and quickly joined the FFA club. During her freshman year, she continued to do prepared public speaking but found her true calling in extemporaneous speaking.“I love public speaking,” Wood said in a press release.
