CAN WOTUS EVER WITHSTAND SCRUTINY? District Judge Daniel Hovland’s preliminary injunction blocking the Biden administration’s Waters of the United States rule in 24 GOP-led states that leveled the challenge isn’t the final word.
Not for this court: The 2023 rule “is neither understandable nor ‘intelligible,’ and its boundaries are unlimited,” Hovland ruled yesterday. A ruling from the Supreme Court in Sackett v. EPA could also clarify the scope of agency authority or the standard the government ought to use to define WOTUS's scope.Welcome to Daily on Energy, written by Washington Examiner Energy and Environment Writers Jeremy Beaman and Breanne Deppisch . A group of more than 100 organizations referenced the IEA pathway’s no new fossil investment clause this very week to discourage the Biden administration from endorsing more LNG supplies globally at the G-7 Summit. What it could mean: If G-7 countries most vulnerable to energy crises are still scouring for a justification to formally support more new investment in gas, IEA may have just given them one.
Digging deeper: After OPEC+ announced its production cut, the Financial Times reported that Granholm’s testimony seemingly ruling out repurchases angered the Saudis and contributed to OPEC+’s decision to cut production. The logic of that is, the SPR is down a few hundred million barrels, and that represents a lot of demand to underpin oil prices.
But the country’s refined products exports also saw a major jump, rising 59.8% to 18.2 million tons, the customs data shows. The agreement, signed by Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó in Moscow this week, will boost Hungary’s volumes of Russian natural gas — which already stand at 4.5 billion cubic meters a year —and allow them to import additional supplies as needed. It would also allow Russian piped oil exports to continue to Hungary.
The news comes as India has emerged as a major buyer of Russian crude, taking advantage of the deep discounts Moscow has offered for its seaborne oil exports following import bans and price caps imposed by many Western nations.
