The man struggles to explain precisely why he did what he did
A father from Long Eaton with no previous convictions to his name is “struggling to explain” why, at the age of 35, he suddenly went on a burglary spree around the town. Joe Birkinshaw cried and shook in the dock for almost the full duration of his 25-minute sentencing hearing which ultimately saw him spared an immediate custodial sentence.
But the victim of the first break-in was able to track electronic devices that were taken to the defendant’s home in Bennett Street where the stolen goods were found.
Abigail Hill, prosecuting, said the spree took place on May 31 and into June 1, last year. She said the first victim, in Prince Street, had gone to bed and had accidentally left his home insecure which allowed Birkinshaw and his accomplice to enter undetected and steal from inside it. “Having carried out that burglary, they moved on to an address in King Street where an outbuilding was targeted and an electric scooter worth £600 was stolen. Then, they entered a garden in Lime Grove and used a crowbar or similar implement to break into a shed and steal a mountain bike.
