DETROIT -- A 31-year-old Detroit man was arraigned Monday on a charge of second-degree child abuse after police said he shot his 2-year-old son in the face with a BB gun Friday. Melvin Phillips appeared in 36th District Court Monday for arraignment on the charge, where bond was set at $10,000 with 10% allowed.
Phillips was charged following an investigation by police into the shooting, which took place at a home in the 4000 block of Bedford. After the boy was shot, his parents took him to a hospital for treatment, where police met the family and began the investigation. Police believe Phillips was handling the gun before he accidentally fired it, striking the child in the lip.
