He broke an immigration law at the age of 7 and was barred from re-entering the U.S.
Jaime Avalos, his wife Yarianna Avalos and their son visit in Juarez, where he is staying as he tries to gain re-entry to the U.S.WASHINGTON — A Houston man who has been stuck in Juárez since last summer after a mishap with his immigration process was finally able to return home this week after receiving humanitarian parole.Jaime Avalos traveled to Mexico last August for an immigration interview, but was barred from re-entering the U.S.
U.S. Rep. Al Green, a Houston Democrat, made it a mission over the past several months to get Avalos back to Houston, arguing it was an injustice for him to be punished for something he had no control over 21 years ago. According to Green's office, Avalos's wife and baby nearly lost their home because Jaime could scarcely contribute to the family while he was stuck in Mexico.
Green filed a bill that would allow Avalos to return to the U.S., as well as legislation rewriting the immigration law Avalos broke, which bars immigrants living in the country illegally from returning for a 10-year span if they leave. Green’s bill would create exceptions for children and for violations that occurred over a decade ago.
"With the congressman’s support we were able to achieve this outcome in only a couple of months as opposed to the usual lengthy wait time," she said in the statement.
