The DA says it is unwilling to form a coalition government with the Patriotic Alliance in Johannesburg.
Efforts to unseat Johannesburg Mayor Thapelo Amad may be compromised as the DA has refused to hold coalition discussions with the Patriotic Alliance because of the party's continued relationship with the ANC. He said the PA had yet to commit to forming a government that was not based on a short-term scramble for positions.
"The existing ongoing arrangements the PA has with the ANC confirm that the PA is not willing to position themselves unequivocally outside the ambit of the ANC," he said. The PA shopped for mayoral committee positions with the ANC and the DA coalition in January. It holds a number of seats in the metro, which could help the DA/ActionSA bloc or the ANC/EFF bloc. The success of thein Amad, scheduled for Tuesday, will rely on support from a majority of councillors.
