The purpose of the DA’s social economic justice draft policy, which was designed to find an alternative to the ANC’s BEE one, is to move SA away from race classification while creating economic inclusion, says the party’s head of policy, Gwen Ngwenya

The party’s head of policy, Gwen Ngwenya, says the draft policy is a completely different approach from what the DA has traditionally done, arguing that it is a move that has been in the works for long time.

In line with its 2013 policy, the party’s new sustainable development goals model recommended other measures to redress inequalities, without placing emphasis on race-based politics. The draft document highlights the country’s woes, including how South Africa is struggling to overcome the past, as well as how the country is plagued by poor governance, corruption and race-based policies which have enabled elite enrichment and the disintegration of the state at the expense of broad-based prosperity.

This goes against the party’s manifesto last year, which recognised race as an important criteria of our country’s reconciliation project and justice.
