The Colorado Attorney General’s Office on Wednesday announced that a state board has found that the District Attorney’s Office of the 12th Judicial District has violated state law regarding crime victims’ rights.
The AG’s office said the findings stem from the Crime Victim Services Advisory Board, a 28-member board appointed by the executive director of the Colorado Department of Public Safety.
“As this process goes forward, we will remain focused on honoring the needs of crime victims and ensuring that their rights are protected,” said Attorney General Phil Weiser in a Wednesday news release. “Under the leadership of DA Alonzo Payne, the 12th JD DA’s office has engaged in a pattern or practice of violating crime victims’ rights, depriving them of their rights as protected by the constitution and Colorado laws,” said the Rocky Mountain Victim Law Center in a memorandum to the AG’s office dated Feb. 9. “Payne and the other attorneys in his office have repeatedly failed to treat victims with fairness, respect, and dignity, which is a violation under” Colorado law.
