DA claws back Tshwane after an intense mayoral race
It was a question of a second time lucky for DA councillor Cilliers Brink as he was elected the new City of Tshwane mayor on Tuesday.
The first effort to elect the mayor was unsuccessful when Makwarela submitted his rehabilitation certificate, which made the manager cancel the advert and reinstate him. Despite the red flag about the credentials of Cope councillor Ofentse Moalusi, the ANC-EFF-led alliance took a gamble to support him, which backfired when their candidate lost to Brink. Brink defeated Moalusi by seven votes.
"This time has seen the agenda of the residents of Tshwane trampled on by those who sought to steal control of the City of Tshwane, and this must be corrected," read the statement of the multiparty coalition government. "The multiparty coalition remains committed to urgent legal action relating to the refusal of the Speaker to allow a motion of no confidence to be considered yesterday. Our legal teams are making progress and will submit court papers on Thursday," added the statement. Delivering his maiden address, Brink committed himself and his party to speed up service delivery.
