This follows an exposé of the Nexus Forensic Services that R123- million was misappropriated from the NSF to buy luxury cars and a farm. The fund was earmarked for a project to buy rabbits, train communities in rabbit farming, and export rabbit meat overseas.Van der Walt says everyone who is involved in distributing the funds must appear before Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Higher Education.

“It is very serious because it is not only the R123 million for the supposed rabbit farm that the family which were allocated that only spent R1.6 million of that on the project. We also found the R187 million in the Eastern Cape where the recipient failed to get an account for their R131 million advance they were given to train 1035 artisans,” said Van der Walt.

The report uncovered fraud, forgery, and non-delivery of services by involved companies, leading to millions of rands being unaccounted for. Instead of supporting intended beneficiaries, the funds were diverted for personal gains, leaving community organizations without support.Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Blade Nzimande’s spokesperson Veli Mbele says the embezzlement of funds from the NSF was discovered and addressed under Nzimande’s leadership.
