Parliament’s portfolio committee is considering public submissions to the bill which aims to formalise the government’s response to climate change in accordance with the Paris agreement.
CAPE TOWN - Public concerns over how government will fund its response to climate change have been backed by the Democratic Alliance .But Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Barbara Creecy said it would be out of step with the country’s legislature to make provision for climate change in the bill.
Creecy has, however, warned that major changes to the draft legislation at this late stage - will risk the government’s ability to be able to effectively respond to natural disasters.READ: SA must tackle energy and climate crises simultaneously, says Ramaphosa "We can’t simply leave this for somebody else to put together a money bill at a later stage, kind of hoping for the best."
