On his third night manning the Daily Show desk, the D.L. Hughley shone brightest during segments where he engaged with those around him.
While telling jokes about’s second retirement announcement, the memorial service for Tyre Nichols, and the missing tamarin monkeys at the Dallas Zoo, Hughley was unexpectedly relaxed in his delivery and demeanor. Correspondentpicked up the energy by wearing a monkey suit during an interview with Hughley, going undercover as a monkey to infiltrate the zoo and find who’s stealing the monkeys. “You wasted your money. That disguise is shitty,” Hughley told Kosta.
The audience ate Hughley’s energy up, sometimes getting so rambunctious that it was hard to hear the host during taping. Overall, Hughley shined most when interacting with others rather than delivering jokes behind the desk, whether it was interviewing Foxworth or during a Black History Month man-on-the-street bit taped in Los Angeles. “Black History Month, you excited?” he asked a Black woman from South Africa on the street. “It’ll be my first,” she said.
