The District of Columbia's population has grown by 15,000 people since July 2023, reaching over 700,000 and marking the strongest population increase in 11 years. This growth is attributed to both natural increase (more births than deaths) and migration (more people moving into D.C. than out).

Today, the U.S. Census Bureau released new population data that shows the District of Columbia’s population grew by approximately 15,000 people from July 2023 to July 2024. Since 2019 that DC’s population has surpassed the 700,000 milestone, underscoring DC’s comeback and its place as a top destination to live, work, and build a future.

People from across the nation and the world are choosing Washington, DC because of our vibrant communities, world-class schools, dynamic job market and strong talent pool, and rich cultural opportunities,” said Mayor Bowser. “DC is a strong, well-run city and people want to be here, and we’re happy about that. We’ll continue to support our residents, attract great employers, and invest in schools, public safety, and economic opportunity – the pillars of our comeback.” Over the past year, the District had an annual growth rate of 2% and its largest population increase in 11 years. This growth was fueled by a combination of natural increase, with 2,761 more births than deaths, and migration, with 12,165 more people moving into the District than moving out. The District’s population increased across all age groups. Notably, international migration has surged, increasing by 21% compared to the previous year, surpassing pre-pandemic levels.
