A new poll shows Lewis George, a democratic socialist and Ward 4 councilmember, leading her nearest rival,Kenyan McDuffie, by 11 percentage points among likely voters. The policy debate centers on restricting teenagers from gathering in certain parts of the city at night,a measure supported by 71% of registered voters yet opposed by Lewis George.
McDuffie has made the matter a central focus, accusing Lewis George of voting against teen curfews at least six times and blocking extended recreation ceNter hours for youths. This comes after Mayor Muriel Bowser implemented strict juvenile curfews following incidents where groups of young folks took over streets, including a recent event at a Navy Yard Chipotle. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro warned that participants in these "teen takeovers" could face fines up to $500 and possible jail time.
Despite the controversy, the poll indicates Lewis George holds 36% support among likely Democratic primary voters compared to McDuffie's 25%, with other candidates each receiving less than 5%. Lewis Georges backing is strongest among younger voters and residents who have lived in the city for under 20 years. She leads by 37 points in Ward 1 and 16 points in Ward 6.
Yet, her advantage diminishes east of the Anacostia River, where she and McDuffie are effectively tied and over 40% of voters remain undecided. The poll, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points among registered voters and 3.7 points among the sample of 836 registered Democrats and likely primary voters, also highlights that several council seats and the district's non-voting congressional seat are on the ballot, making the election consequential for the city's direction after more than a decade of Bowsers leadership. the findings suggest that while public safety concerns are prominent, Lewis George's base remains solid, though undecided voters in key districts could still sway the outcome
