But so far, the positive statistics aren’t resonating with locals. Some were so shaken by the spike in violence they looked into hiring their own private security for their neighborhoods. Parts of the District that have long struggled with crime are also still scarred from a turbulent 2023 Two separate barricade situations took place in February, with one of the standoffs erupting because a gunman shot three MPD officers.
Mr. Graves — who has been badgered for his office’s woeful prosecution rate — appeared correct to say the District was six to 12 months behind the rest of the country in getting control of their pandemic-era crime wave.
