Miller blasted the D-backs in a KNBR radio broadcast of a Cactus League split-squad game Saturday. In Miller's view, the team had failed to adequately prep the broadcasters with information about its players and staff. Miller joked that he had"to guess" about who was involved in a play and"The D-backs decided the heck with the big leagues — let’s just not be a big-league team for the split squad," Miller said."... They have sent no public relations people over here, no information about who the manager is or anything at all about it. So, if they don’t want to be a big-league team, we’ll just treat them like a sandlot team. "They gave us no information about anything. So, one of those guys in a red shirt is managing and a right-hander, one of their right-handers is on the mound. ... There are certain things that go along with being a big-league team. Like, try to act like a big-league team." He concluded the inning with a snide rip of the Diamondbacks."See, I even had names," he said after calling an inning-ending groundout."Did a little homework on whatThe 71-year-old Miller is perhaps one of the most popular broadcasters in the sport. The Hayward High School product has been a Giants staple since the late 1990s and is also known for his previous work with ESPN and the Orioles. He received the Baseball Hall of Fame's Ford C. Frick award in 2010.."They had their main game up at Salt River Fields, but the B team, or the split-squad team, was here," he explained."We were a little irritated that we didn't get any information about who was the manager, who were the coaches and whatnot. ... Anyway, I feel badly that it's become this story that's going throughout the internet. ... I was just trying to have a little fun and also express being a little irritated. At the same time, I'm very sorry that it became such a big deal. It's just a spring-training Cactus League game. We could probably do these games if we never mentioned any names on the other team. ... Hopefully, it will die off. If anybody asks, you say, 'Oh, yeah, he apologized right on the air about it.'" The"sorry you were offended" half-apology was not enough for Arizona's public relations staff, who fired back in a. They claimed that"top executives at the Giants""apologized profusely" for Miller's rant. KNBR declined to comment on the situation. The Giants did not immediately respond to questions about whether their executives apologized on Miller's behalf.
