Day of the Dead celebrations in San Diego County are beginning this weekend.
SAN DIEGO — Día de Los Muertos is a time to honor our loved ones who have died, it's a celebration with vibrant colors and rich culture.
Día de Los Muertos or Day of The Dead is observed Nov.1 and 2. The first day is known as Día de Los Angelitos, in honor of children who died. The second day is dedicated to adults. “Just think of it as a family get-together, except most of the people in attendance are not alive,” Bazaar del Mundo Spokesperson, Jacqueline Aguilar said. “Actually has its roots since the Aztecs who believed the dead was not the end, but they celebrated as a cycle of life,” Aguilar said.
Ofrendas or altars are created to welcome souls during the two day celebration. Although each offering is different, they all share the same four elements. Fire is an element needed, its the reason candles are lit up to help guide the souls. Flor de Cempasuchil also known as marigolds represent earth. Plates of food, pan de muerto and other items the dead enjoyed in life are placed on the ofrenda. A cup of water is necessary for when souls arrive. The fourth element is wind, which presents as papel picado. Aguilar is honoring her step-father for the first time this year, he died last November.
