The Oscar nominee joins Little Gold Men to discuss her moving refugee drama Drift, which marks a subtle career turning point.
Enter Drift, a poignant, stark character study which marks Erivo’s screen producing debut and one of her most impressive screen performances to date. Set and shot in Greece, it’s an uncompromising indie that was not made under a SAG contract—permitting Erivo to promote the project—and that, following a strong Sundance premiere, is launching a scrappy awards campaign via distributor Utopia.
Before I came to set in the morning, I would make sure that I was taking care of myself and making sure that I was working out or just releasing some of that energy before going into the next day. Otherwise I would never have survived. It was a lot. I'm also curious about working with Alia Shawkat in that context. She's an actor with a different energy than I'd seen you play opposite before. She plays an American guide who befriends your character.
