Gavin Hicks was spooked by the death of professional cyclist Jason Lowndes on a road outside Bendigo. Six years later, he was seriously injured in a collision on the same road.
abc.net.au/news/calls-for-mandurang-road-upgrade-cyclists-hit-killed/102817162A cyclist recovering from major injuries is calling for road safety changes, after being hit on the same stretch of road that claimed the life of a rising elite cyclist in 2017.
Mr Hicks is calling for the City of Greater Bendigo to lower the 80kph speed limit on the stretch of road, which also claimed the life of elite cyclist Jason Lowndes in 2017 during a training ride."As a driver, it's 80kph … which I think is too fast," he said. He had been training for the half ironman event at the Ironman World Championships in New Zealand — which involves a 1.9km swim, 90km bike ride and 21km run. After spending nine days in intensive care at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and three weeks in Bendigo's St John of God hospital, Mr Hicks is now working his way through rehabilitation."I'm still not working — until my back is 100 per cent I don't want to do any more damage," he said.
"[There are] blind hills and corners. Cars can't see when they get up behind cyclists — they still pass on double lines on the hills."
