Cy-Fair ISD declined an interview request to discuss the 2021-2022 Children At Risk rankings, saying the district’s focus is on the state accountability system's criteria.27th overall out of 84 Houston area school districts. The district ranked 21st for middle schools and 17th for high schools in the Houston area.

Data provided by the nonprofit shows 60 percent of the district’s elementary school students, 56 percent of middle school students and 51 percent of high school students were determined by Children At Risk to be economically disadvantaged. Smith Middle School, scoring an A grade, ranked fifth out of more than 300 middle schools in the Houston area. The campus had the highest enrollment—1,740 students—and lowest percentage of economically disadvantaged students—11.3 percent—of any middle school in the district.

Smith was previously ranked 12th in the Houston area in the 2020 rankings. Children At Risk paused grading in 2021 due to the pandemic.
