Case Western Reserve University has replaced its single-use carryout containers with reusable bowls made of stainless steel.
Published: Nov. 30, 2024, 5:30 a.m.CLEVELAND, Ohio – During the COVID-19 pandemic, Case Western Reserve University started offering students the ability to carry out their meals at the school’s three residential dining halls.But starting with this school year, students are taking their late-night pizza and early-morning omelets back to their dorms a little differently - in stainless steel bowls with silicone tops, rather than single-use clamshells..
So far, more than 900 students or about a quarter of those on the Case Western Reserve meal plan, have installed the app on their smart phones. It’s the only takeout option they have now that the school has eliminated single-use clamshells altogether.
That “turnkey” approach - providing the app and the containers in one contract - was appealing, said Dick Jamieson, vice president of campus services at Case Western Reseve. Eventually, the school would like to expand the service to the retail food providers inside the Tinkham Veale University Center.
“Whatever looks good at that time is what I’ll put in there,” said Burnham, a student member of the school committee that gave the service a thumbs up before it was adopted. Usefull provides a dashboard to customers that estimates how much trash is avoided, water is saved and carbon emissions are reduced when a container is not made of single-use plastic and then disposed.
