CVS has opened its first-ever “pharmacy-only” location in Chicago, but what exactly will that look like?
Signs on the new storefront describe it as"Rx services only," while inside, the smaller format store showcases shelves with medications. The first-of-its-kind store opened at 2628 W. Pershing Rd. in the city's West End neighborhood.
Described as an"apothecary-style" store, the location has set the stage for nearly 20 other similar stores to open in"select communities" in 2026.Signs on the new storefront describe it as"Rx services only," while inside, the smaller format store showcases shelves with medications. CVS first announced plans to open the new style of pharmacy just over one year ago. The company said it plans to open more than a dozen other pharmacy-only locations in the U.S. this year, including ones in Texas, Michigan, New York and more. The pharmacy chain said the new Chicago location aims to"help bridge gaps in care and make it easier for community members to access medications, immunizations and other health care services provided by pharmacists." The new stores are less than 5,000 square feet and offer"a full-service pharmacy with limited over-the-counter products available for purchase," according to a statement from the company. The format aims to alter pharmacy footprints to address"shifts in the pharmacy industry," CVS said. “Pharmacists are among the most accessible and most trusted health care providers,” Len Shankman, executive vice president and president of pharmacy and consumer wellness with CVS Health, said in a statement. “We know how important it is for patients to be able to speak one-on-one with their pharmacist, have their questions answered and seek medication advice when needed. Our new, pharmacy-only locations allow our pharmacy teams to continue to build relationships with patients – their friends and neighbors – and provide on the ground pharmacy care in communities that need us.”CVS said it also plans to open more than 40 new CVS Pharmacy locations,"including traditional stores and pharmacies in Target," though no timetable was given. The opening comes just after CVS-owned Oak Street Health began laying off more than 200 employees and after the pharmacy chain shuttered hundreds of locations as part of an ongoing effort to"realign" the company's retail footprint.
