Spring cleanup in Northeast Ohio includes houses, garages and waterways.
John Benson, special to cleveland.com“The cleanup was started by Cuyahoga Soil and Water 25 years ago, when cleanups focused on Big Creek’s west and Chevy branches in the Belliare-Puritas neighborhood where the need was greatest,”
Even more important is the removal of plastics that can entangle or become consumed by wildlife downstream to larger rivers, lakes and, eventually, oceans. “Before that, there wasn’t much attention being paid to the trash and debris that collected -- and sometimes thrown -- in the waterway,” she said. “The first couple years, that section of Big Creek was cleaned up in the spring and a couple years later, Big Creek Connects was brought on and the cleanup expanded to two other sections of Big Creek.
Cleanups offer raffle prizes for volunteers along with other environmental education opportunities such as backyard composting as well as pizza.Volunteers will gain an understanding of how streams work and evolve, potential threats that can affect the health of a stream and what they can do to reduce or eliminate those threats.Long sleeves and pants are recommended. Children under 18 must have adult supervision.
