The long lines at some locations weren’t indicative of high countywide turnout, however. Of the county’s registered 880,524 voters, 45.11% voted on Tuesday or in the run-up of Election Day.

Sheena Hines said she had already been waiting an hour by the time polls closed. She first tried to vote after work, around 4:30 p.m., but left after seeing the long lines. By the time she returned, “it was even worse,” Hines said. “I had a feeling turnout was going to be higher because it was a beautiful day for voting, we had a good steady stream [of voters at polling locations] and we had extra people during primetime in the morning and afternoon. It felt like it should’ve been higher than it was, but I guess it was just an illusion,” board spokesman Mike West said.
Some voters reported machines going down throughout the day, but the spokesman said they were fixed by evening.that a machine failure had caused an hourlong shut-down earlier in the day. “A new machine brought to the site got things going again,” the voter said. “I was told that the line waiting wound around the voting room and out into the parking lot.”
At Bay Village’s Bay Presbyterian Church, poll workers reported 900 ballots cast as of 1 p.m. – approximately three times the rate that the location normally sees by that point in the day, one poll worker said.
