Cuyahoga County is tackling a rising tide of carjackings with a $1 million grant from the Department of Justice. The funds will be used to implement data-driven strategies for crime prevention and investigation, aiming to reduce violent car thefts and enhance public safety.
CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - Cuyahoga County leaders are working to combat carjackings with the help of a $1 Million grant. The Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department was awarded the money from the Department of Justice and will use the funds to support a data-based approach to investigations and crime prevention when it comes to violent car thefts.
Working with the Crime Strategies Unit of the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office, the Sheriff’s Department will work to identify patterns and assess risk factors associated with carjacking. The goal is to enhance public safety with effective theft prevention measures. The grant funds will include hiring support staffing, including a Research Analyst through Cleveland State University.Cuyahoga County Sheriff Harold Pretel tells 19 News, “As the County Sheriff, my top priority is ensuring Cuyahoga County residents are safe. This funding will allow us to develop and implement strategies to deter violent crimes associated with carjacking, including aggravated thefts, shootings, and homicides.” Cuyahoga County has experienced an increase in violent thefts of motor vehicles. At one point carjackings reached an all-time high. In 2021, there was a spike in the date, showing over 420 crimes classified as carjackings. In many cases, the offenders are juveniles, and the crimes are violent often involving firearms
