The custody issue stems from the conviction of Common Pleas Court Judge Cassandra Collier-Williams’ son, who is serving a life sentence for killing the children’s mother.
Collier-Williams declined to comment. She referred questions to her attorney, Jennifer Hanes.
Cuyahoga County prosecutors, who represent the county’s Department of Children and Family Services in custody cases, sought to portray the judge’s decisions as evidence that her imprisoned son, Omnisun Azali, is Collier-Williams’ top priority, not her grandchildren. Mwaka Azali was killed in 2021. Lipps found that proposal was not in the best interest of the children because it would likely take years to finalize the adoption process, and it could have resulted in them being placed with people they do not know when they have two relatives they do know vying for custody.
The judge also granted visitation rights with to Rebecca Tawana, the sister of the children’s mother, Mwaka Azali. A hearing has been set for next May to ensure the two sides are complying with the visitation rights.
