ICYMI: Cuthand: Pope's apology to First Nations fails to address damage
It fell short of an overall apology admitting that the whole purpose of these institutions was wrong.
We must continue to focus on the bedrock issue of racism and colonialism, and that is the Doctrine of Discovery that allowed for the wholesale colonization of the non-European, non-Christian world. The Bull stated that any land not inhabited by Christians was available to be “discovered,” claimed and exploited by Christian rulers. Indigenous peoples only had the right of occupancy and it could be abolished.
The Fourth World as described by George Manual, the former head of the world Council of Indigenous people, consists of the Indigenous nations within the European diaspora. Nations like Canada, Australia and the United States are built on Indigenous land and the original people are subject to internal colonialism.
But in the end, apologies are important from a symbolic perspective only. The damage has been done and we are living with it. We can’t go back and repair the past; we continue to live with the effects. The answer lies within us.
