Despite weeks of negotiations and the excitement of a potential rematch, the popular 3-point shooting contest featuring Stephen Curry and Sabrina Ionescu will not be part of the 2023 NBA All-Star Weekend festivities in San Francisco. The NBA decided against proceeding with the event, citing a desire to elevate the experience beyond last year's success and maintain focus on the All-Star Sunday's new format.

The NBA announced Thursday that the 3-point shooting event featuring two of the biggest stars in the NBA and W NBA , a highlight of last year's All-Star Weekend in Indianapolis, will not be part of the festivities in San Francisco. Weeks of talks, even extending into All-Star week itself, failed to produce a plan that met the league's expectations. While a rematch seemed like a natural progression – All-Star Weekend being on Curry's home floor – the NBA ultimately decided against it.

'We weren't able to land on a plan we thought would raise the bar off of last year's special moment,' NBA spokesman Mike Bass said. 'We all agreed not to proceed and will instead keep the focus on All-Star Sunday's new format.' Curry had expressed a desire for the rematch, and discussions had been circulating about a 2-on-2 format potentially involving other NBA and WNBA players. However, these talks seemed to collapse in recent weeks, although the NBA had hoped to incorporate some form of Curry vs. Ionescu back into the weekend schedule. Potentially, they considered placing it within Sunday night's lineup between games of the new All-Star mini-tournament rather than having it as a standalone event on All-Star Saturday as it was last year. 'We've been talking about finding different ways to change this up next year,' Ionescu said after last year's event. 'I think he has a partner in mind that's going to join him. So I'm open to any partner that could help me win and take that belt that he has up front and center away from him.' Curry defeated Ionescu 29-26 last season in the inaugural men-versus-women 3-point shooting contest, a groundbreaking event at the league's showcase weekend. The competition also generated funds for both players' respective foundations
