Punxsutawney Phil did end up seeing his shadow Wednesday, predicting another six weeks of barren cold just asGroundhog Day is a more than 130-year-old tradition in the namesake Pennsylvania town, which once a year grips the nation with its charming and odd tradition. “You don’t really hear about [Groundhog Day], so curiosity got us,” said Sandy Boswell, the club’s president.
While the first mention of Groundhog Day appeared in Punxsutawney’s local newspaper in 1886, the tradition has deeper roots in Christianity. German lore said if a hedgehog saw its shadow on Candlemas Day, Feb. 2, there would be six more weeks of bad weather. A lack of hedgehogs in the U.S. led German immigrants to opt for a similarly hibernating animal, the groundhog,“There’s no way he could see his shadow, it was silly,” Boswell said of their 2011 visit.
