Gig entertainers are being hired to perform at virtual parties often arranged by coworkers or groups of friends by abebrown716

. “People love it—you don’t get a chance to see a ventriloquist that often,” says Brown, 57. “And it’s just like TV coming right at you.”

“People love seeing and learning about [the animals]. On a lot of the Zoom meetings, people take pictures of everyone on the call—plus, like, a hedgehog,” says Phillips. “Incidentally, I’m just in the background of a million pictures. I don’t know how many pictures there are online of me holding the animals.”

With live events unlikely to return in any form for many months, these entertainers are rushing to rewrite portions of existing acts that can’t work virtually while continuing to develop original, quarantine-ready material. “It’s everyday finding time to tweak, develop new materials so that if people are asking me to come back and do repeat events, they will see a completely different performance,” says Colin Cloud, 33,who, until COVID-19, had a standing residency at The Mirage in Las Vegas.
