In a Sunday press conference, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said professional sports leagues can immediately begin training camps while undertaking health precautions, the latest step taken by the state as it inches toward normalcy amid the pandemic—and in seeming agreement with President Trump, who also expressed a desire to see sports back in action.
“"Hockey, basketball, baseball, football, whoever can reopen we're a ready, willing and able partner,” Cuomo said in a May 18 press conference.with Sharyl Attkisson posted to her website Sunday: “What does mean something to me is getting sports back....I think it's a good thing, and it's going to happen.”
In addition to the resumption of sports camps, Cuomo said RV parks and campgrounds will be reopened statewide tomorrow, on Memorial Day, while veterinarians are allowed to reopen Tuesday. Statewide, intubations remain on a downward trend, although hospitalizations ticked up and the death toll spiked to 109, after declining to 89 Saturday, the lowest toll since March.
The Long Island and Mid-Hudson region are set to reopen this week, Cuomo said, adding that the Long Island Rail Road will be disinfected daily, and mask wearing is required on public transportation.“I would like to start watching sports,” Cuomo said April 14.
