Numerous critical issues confront the nation's largest city, but for former Governor Andrew Cuomo , the paramount concern is money. One of the Democratic candidates, Zohran Mamdani, advocates for an even higher minimum wage of $30 by 2030. Cuomo's latest public appearance was at a union hall in Midtown, where he received the endorsement of department store clerks, food service workers, and bus drivers.
They enthusiastically supported his proposal for a $20 minimum hourly wage. ' $20 - that is the fair wage! And that's what we want and that's what we're going to get passed,' Cuomo stated. He subsequently exited through a side door and departed without taking questions.New York City's minimum wage stands at $16.50, more than double the national average. However, so too is the cost of living. Mamdani is currently polling second in the race and encountered Eyewitness News on a street corner in Chelsea shortly after Cuomo's speech in Midtown. 'You think $30 an hour is maybe too much for somebody who's scooping up French fries?' N.J. Burkett inquired. 'No, because when you look at the statistics of what is a living wage in New York City today, it already is close to $30 an hour,' Mamdani responded. Cuomo's approach involves tax credits, although he previously opposed an increase in the New York City minimum wage. 'Everything that Andrew Cuomo talks about today is exactly the opposite of what he did in prior years,' mayoral candidate Scott Stringer remarked. Furthermore, a statement from the Brad Lander Campaign indicated, 'it's still a mystery what Andrew Cuomo actually believes and what he'll do as mayor.' Nonetheless, the candidates recognize that this issue resonates deeply with Democratic voters
